Why do we feel the need to possess things?
I was driving to an appointment today and saw what looked like a mom and a child out on the front lawn with a 3-foot x 3-foot pen with two bunnies inside. That got me wondering what is our obsession with ownership?
We have a University just up the road where there is bunny heaven! So many rabbits there for our enjoyment. Why do we need to restrict their movement through ownership? Will they live longer in captivity? Probably, but will they be happier? Does that matter to us? As long as we are happy right?
I can understand it with domesticated animals, they wouldn’t survive well in the wild and we did that to them. We robbed them of their ability to survive alone. For no other reason than to make ourselves happy.
Do we have a right to render another specie incapable of survival?
Is that what technology is doing to us? Is it possessing us?
I don’t know about you but I used to remember phone numbers, and be able to locate an address without the help of my phone. Not so much anymore. When I leave the house without my phone, I feel uneasy and want to turn back to go get it. What if I need it? What if I get stranded. Has that ever happened? No! But it might. What if someone needs to get in touch with me? What if I have to take a picture of my lunch?
It’s so much easier to look at mom and son possessing a bunny and controlling it’s life than it is to look at how I am no different than the rabbit with the exception of one small detail.
I am choosing to be possessed. The rabbit has no choice.
With this awareness comes the responsibility to make other choices or admit – I am owned by my technology. Oh man, not only am I owned by it. I spent a lot of money on it, so that I could be owned. That is one step deeper into the choice. One step further away of being able to survive on my own.
